Economic abuse in Latin America: What do we know so far?
This report provides an overview of economic abuse in Latin America—a form of violence that remains largely invisible despite its significant impact on women’s financial autonomy and well-being. The study explores how this type of abuse manifests, its intersection with other forms of violence, and the socio-cultural and economic factors that sustain it across the region. It also examines institutional, legal, and financial-sector responses, highlighting both progress and gaps in protecting survivors.
The research found highly varied prevalence rates across countries, depending on the specific context, population studied, and research methodologies used. It also identifies particularly high vulnerability among migrant women, Afro-descendant women, and other at-risk groups. The report underscores the urgent need for better disaggregated data and multisectoral approaches to design effective public policies and prevention strategies.
This study was prepared by Three Fin Consulting through a literature review and aims to serve as a resource for policymakers, civil society organizations, financial institutions, and other stakeholders committed to gender equality and the eradication of violence.
